Soo Young Kim Chrisfield

Music Educator

After years of study as a child, I started giving piano lessons to my next door neighbors at age 19. Since then, I’ve accumulated nearly 30 years of experience teaching piano and voice privately. I’ve also taught as a classroom music teacher for twelve years in four different independent schools, with students ranging from infants to 8th grade. I am certified in Orff Schulwerk, a pedagogical process that encourages students to say, sing, dance, and play.

Classically Trained Singer

I attended George Washington University as a Presidential Arts Scholar and then studied voice at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. I later earned my Master of Music degree from the University of Maryland Opera Studio, studying under the renowned America soprano, Carmen Balthrop.

I have performed with Peabody Opera Theatre, Maryland Opera Studio, Opera Vivente in Baltimore, and Opera International in Washington, DC with principal roles including Servillia in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, Petit Yniold in Debussy’s Pélléas et Mélisande, Mustardseed in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Erster Knabe in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. I have been the featured soprano soloist for 15 seasons with the Grace Church annual Bach Festival.

Community Builder

I am passionate about including Asian American voices in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) conversations and programming. I served in the DEI committees at the Barrie School and the Middle Atlantic Chapter of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (MAC-AOSA). I presented “Breaking Stereotypes and Bringing AAPI Visibility” to music educators at workshops for the Friends Council Performing Arts Peer Network and for MAC-AOSA. I have also been active in organizing AANHPI Heritage Month events at various schools.

Let me help you achieve your musical goals!
